On the right of the picture is a very old Kadambha tree, whose lower limbs extend out over the dry bed of the Yamuna river. It is said that this is the very same tree (or at least a direct descendant of the tree) from which Krishna leapt into the waters of the Yamuna to do battle with the great serpent Kaliya, whose presence in the river spread poison and deadly fumes all around. Krishna drove out Kaliya, but that was 5,000 years ago and now the Yamuna is polluted again, this time by the factories and sewage of modern India.
